DOGOLE & MUSIC BEYOND BORDERS
On Saturday evening September 23rd at 7PM
my esteemed collaborators & I will unveil our
special tribute performance
“THE LAST TRANE to AFRICA” in honor of John Coltrane’s birthday
at OAKTOWN JAZZ WORKSHOPS”
in Jack London Square 55 Washington Street  Oakland, CA 94607
we’ll focus on the Afro-centric side of Trane’s music, featuring unusual percussion instruments in concert with more traditional Jazz instrumentation.
Our special guest AVOTCJA is creating a new Poem for the occasion
that she’ll premiere at the show.
Musicians include:
RICHARD HOWELL – Saxophones, Vocals
FRANK MARTIN – Piano
GARY BROWN – Double Bass
DAVID FRAZIER – Global Percussion
IAN DOGOLE – Global Percussion
AVOTCJA – Poetry, Ocean Drum
R\This concert is part of Jim Bennett’s “In The Moment” concert series,
presented in collaboration with Oaktown Jazz Workshops. This show is
also supported by Jazz in the Neighborhood’s Guaranteed Fair Wage Fund.
A special shout-out to Ian Carey for his poster design. Please join us for this
special event that is sure to uplift and energize.

JAM in an Afrofuturistic universe hosted by San Francisco POET
LAUREATE KIM SHUCK. Universes will intersect, dissect, and
groove to a mixture of funk, and words intertwining in non-linear
realities with Shuck’s special guest poets ISHMAEL REED, AVOTCJA,
STAAJABU, DEVORAH MAJOR, TUREEDA MIKELL, and Dr. GLENN
PARRIS. These poetic grandmasters will light the universe with
words celebrating Blackness and the universality of life itself. To

from Billy Strayhorn to Little Richard to Sylvester,

guest appearance from celebrated poet &

School for the Arts’ award-winning youth acappella
